My Homey Valentine
We are almost one year into a pandemic that will go down in history for the impact it has had on life as we know it. Whether we are lamenting the disruption or grateful for the ability to slow things down a bit, we have all had to adjust. And so too, have our homes.
Home has always been a center point in our lives. It used to see us off in the morning when we left for work, school, errands, the gym and travel. It was waiting to relax and rejuvenate us when we returned from a full and exhausting day. We looked forward to starting and ending our days there, but now we are spending the time in between there too. We are working, attending class, working out and virtually visiting with friends and loved ones without leaving its confines. We may have even welcomed others to stay with us during this time. The outside world has crossed the threshold and made itself quite comfortable, occupying every nook and cranny available. And our homes have made adjustments and made do, like a gracious hostess who’s learned she is having unexpected houseguests, and does not ask how long they will be staying.
I’m happy to say that I think our homes are being recognized for the important role they play in our lives, and I thank the pandemic for making that so clear. Designers and contractors are busier than ever, as people are once again putting focus on investing and improving the home. I’ve heard many people say how grateful they are that they have a place to ride out this storm and how the home has risen to the challenge of accepting the added burdens we’ve put on them. We are finally showing our homes the love and respect they deserve, but have never asked for.
Soon enough this pandemic will be behind us, but I am hoping the gratitude we have for the place we call home is not lost. I hope that we don't revert to thinking that the best parts of life happen outside the home, because we’ve discovered that’s not necessarily true. I hope we continue to pay more attention and interact with it more than morning goodbyes and evening hellos. I hope we continue to strengthen our bond with a place that is quietly always there, no matter what life throws at us.
